Psychotherapy is one of the most popular methods of psychological help. In this article you will learn what it actually is and how to find the treatment that works best for you.

What is psychotherapy?

It is the most popular and one of the most effective methods of assisting a person with psychological problems. Frequent visits to a psychotherapist are aimed at better understanding of oneself as a person, ways of thinking and reactions to emotions  . Psychotherapy can be a form of mental health, as well as healthy eating or regular exercise. All this is to help us feel better and improve the condition of our body. Frequent contact with a psychotherapist will help us avoid civilization diseases as well as strengthen our mental immunity.

The goal of psychotherapy is to meet the main three categories of therapeutic work. The first to mention here is the prevention of mood drops, or simply “a worse day”. Secondly, sessions with a psychotherapist are to restore our previous stable mental state from before the deterioration. Third, we want to deal with the current problems that we encounter in our lives every day. As a result, we become more resilient and stronger in the face of everyday stressors.

What is psychotherapy not?

  • Classes where you will receive instructions on what to do
  • A process by which someone else will take responsibility for any changes in your life
  • A meeting where you talk to a specialist as with your colleague.
  • A place where someone will judge you.

The beginnings of psychotherapy

The first contact with a psychotherapist may seem a bit strange. The nature of the conversation and the questions asked by the specialist may significantly differ from the problem. However, this is a deliberate procedure, it is intended to direct the patient’s attention to things that he himself does not notice. It is also worth realizing that the first meetings are crucial for the psychotherapist to get to know the person. So you cannot expect spectacular results from the very beginning, you should take time with everything.

Some methods of psychotherapy are based on various exercises, visualizing certain things or tasks that are intended to be carried out between sessions with a specialist. These types of treatments can in many cases increase the effectiveness of therapeutic sessions, but it should be remembered that each client has different needs, just as each psychotherapist has his own individual style of work. Sometimes psychotherapy is seen as a method of treating people who suffer from disorders or who have significant difficulties in functioning in everyday life. The truth, however, lies in the middle because psychological support has a much wider application. Thanks to meetings with a psychotherapist, we can improve the quality of our emotional life, build self-esteem or improve our relationships in a relationship or with loved ones.

How many meetings we will have to hold depends on the type and complexity of our problems. It has been accepted that psychotherapy can be divided into short-term and long-term psychotherapy. The first form is limited to about 20 meetings, and it aims to solve one specific problem. The second form of (long-term) therapy includes a greater number of meetings, and they are designed to get to know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, and your fears to gain the former peace and harmony of everyday life.

What are the difference between psychotherapy and a psychologist?

At the beginning, it is worth starting with who the psychotherapist is and who the psychologist is. To become a psychologist, you must be a university graduate and have a master’s degree in psychology. The psychotherapist, on the other hand, may or may not be a psychologist. Starting work in the field of psychotherapy must be supported by the completion of a 4-year psychotherapy school.

Sessions with a psychologist are more ad hoc support in current problems and dilemmas. The purpose of this type of session is to deal with problems and take a specific path to overcoming the problem. By using the advice of a psychologist, we can count on support in specific areas of life.

The premise of psychotherapy is long-term work on oneself and a deeper understanding of oneself. Regular meetings are aimed at increasing the client’s awareness. It is the client’s job to remember their role. It is to be about discovering oneself to the extent that is possible at a given moment. It is good for the patient not to force himself to confess and to give himself time for everything. Lying to yourself or covering up certain facts can extend the entire therapy, but also harm the overall therapeutic process.

Each of us should treat visits to a psychotherapist as an element of taking care of our well-being. Appropriate mental condition is a necessary element in today’s times full of stress and everyday challenges. By taking care of ourselves, we not only take care of our own needs, but also have a real impact on the quality of relationships between us and our loved ones.
