When should you choose a rising from relations? A roof included as a load-bearing structure with a certain level of slope is only a partial and not very professional concept, because in practice the roof consists not only of the external finish, but above all of internal elements, among which the roof trusses play the most important role . They are responsible for supporting not only the weight of the roof itself, but also everything that is on it.

The roofing technique based on truss structures is quite popular both in the West and in Europe, and has recently been gaining importance also in Poland. However, it is worth introducing this topic to many investors, as this technology has undergone many modifications in recent years.

Roof trusses – what are they?

The basic load-bearing elements of the roof structure are roof trusses for the truss of a single-family house. Their task is to transfer the load between it and the rest of the building, which are usually load-bearing walls. They are used practically everywhere, and they are best suited for roofs with large areas and spans, which allows to reduce unnecessary points of support. Their basic element, regardless of the application and construction, are the belts – upper and lower, they provide support for posts and diagonals.

The posts are vertical elements, they will be a direct support of the outer roof structure, while the diagonals are diagonal elements, which are perfect for roofs with a slight slope. Both are usually fastened with straps via gusset plates, although it should be mentioned here that this is not the only way to fasten them. Connected elements of  wooden trusses is called nodes. Especially in winter, the loads to which the roof is subjected are enormous, therefore this connection should have excellent strength properties and low susceptibility to the ambient temperature. Most often, the trusses are made of wood, although steel or reinforced concrete can also be used interchangeably, but in both cases it is necessary to use load-bearing walls resistant to overloads and more durable foundations.

In what places will the trusses work?

The use of trusses is used when we want to build a roof with a higher resistance to external influences than usual. The relatively high cost makes the roof trusses not very popular in countries where the average daily temperature is high, such as the Mediterranean countries. The main factor that determines the usefulness of the use of truss technology is snow, which, unlike rain, is no longer removed quickly and easily from the roof surface.

During the thaw, snow additionally increases its weight, which makes the roof even more vulnerable to damage. Another factor that makes the installation of trusses reasonable is the wind that affects the roofs with high slope. These factors make the roof trusses best used in temperate climates, mainly in the United States, Western Europe and Australia. Due to the high production costs, this structure lost out to the prefabrication technology in regions such as Asia and the eastern part of the Russian Federation.

Elements of the roof truss

Once we know what roof trusses are and know their application, it is worth learning more about the other parts of the roof. Among the roof truss, we can distinguish such elements as:

  • brick wall – a wooden beam placed directly on the wall of the building – its role is to transfer loads between the roof structure and the load-bearing wall – most often they have a square cross-sectional area – the larger the roof, the greater its value,
  • rafter – characteristic, inclined beams that are the basis for battens or purlins, to which roofing materials are attached – fastened with the so-called “Collar flaps”, and their number and arrangement depend on the size of the roof, the slope and the loads it will be subjected to,
  • purlins – structural elements of the roof, whose task is to transfer the load between the roofing and rafters – there are ridge, ceiling and intermediate ones,
  • tongs – they are a combination of two parallel to each other wooden elements, which are designed to connect adjacent stool frames, and their main task is to strengthen individual roof segments,
  • strut – a wooden beam set diagonally, which stiffens the vertical and horizontal components of the roof, its structure depends on the complexity of the truss.

Is it worth using roof trusses?

In the moderate climate, which also prevails in Poland, it is reasonable to use roof truss structures . This is due to the fact that the roof is often subjected to enormous overloads that can easily damage its structure. Therefore, it is worth investing once and having a job well done, and then enjoy a solid house, resistant to even the most adverse weather conditions for a long time.
